Everybody loves to save money. Funerals can be very costly affairs. I’d like to highlight just a few ideas on money saving tips but still achieve a beautiful service.
Choose an independent funeral director who is not governed by fixed packages or driven by sales targets. An independent funeral director can tailor their services to suit your needs are interested in maintaining their reputation for quality.
Don’t feel pressured into spending more than you can afford. The words you say and how you say them are far more important than having the biggest floral tributes or the most cars.
Shop around for things like orders of service. There are many online options or small local printers. Just be sure they can deliver in good time. Perhaps print one from a template on the Internet?
A simple A6 card with the running order and perhaps a poem or photo on the back is sometimes all you need. Hymns can be sung from words on a screen or a regular sheet of paper. You may not need one for each person attending. Perhaps one between two will suffice?
Flowers don’t have to be ostentatious. A simple spray which is given with love means just as much. Or how about having everyone place flowers as they enter. Cover the coffin in a spectacular colour.
Little touches like seed cards can also be done without great expense. In the past, I’ve wrapped tiny parcels of seeds in tissue paper and finished them off with a beautiful little silver bow. It’s so personal too!
Did you know that you can choose your own Celebrant? Don’t feel obliged to just have someone through the funeral director. They may not necessarily be the best one for you. Celebrants are all different.
Use the Celebrant Directory to choose and sometimes save on costs. Contact your chosen Celebrant to check the date before confirming with the funeral home.
Video tributes can also be made yourself and downloaded to the crematorium at almost half the price.
Funerals don’t have to be held in a crematorium. You can hold service in alternative venues such as village halls, gardens, hotels and woodland burials. They can be conducted with the deceased present or simply as a memorial service. Book the crematorium for a simple 15 minute slot either before or after the main service for Committal only.
The wonderful thing about a Celebrant led funeral service is that limitations on time – dates and the length of the service are no longer a problem. It also means that mourners can go straight on to the wake without the need to travel.
Don’t forget suits and outfits can be hired if your wardrobe is not typically full of formal wear.
